Company History
We’ve been at the forefront of change in the financial world for over 238 years. We have weathered times of calm and crisis, and we have done it by adapting, refining, and consistently improving our services. That spirit of discovery has enabled us to stay ahead of the curve and deliver maximum success for our clients yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
1780s – Founded by Alexander Hamilton in 1784 as one of the first US Banks, we issued the first loan to the US government.
1790s – the first stock traded on the New York Stock Market in 1792, which became the NYSE.
1880s – One of the first banks to offer bank accounts to women.
1970s – Launched the first money market fund.
1980s – Introduced the first tri-party repo trade.
1990s – Launched the first European ETF and First bank to process securities over the internet!
2000s – First International wire and The Bank of New York and Mellon merge – creating BNY Mellon!
2010s – First to launch a mobile trading app!
TODAY – Bank to 97% of the world’s top banks, three-fourths of the Fortune 500, operating in 35 countries
